I built videolan-client 0.8.4 for Tao Linux 4. It's available from my 
repository:
http://www.nanotechnologies.qc.ca/propos/linux/tao-4/i386/extras/RPMS

Use Dag repository to satisfy dependencies.

Having tested both videolan-client and MPlayer, I do prefer MPlayer.
