Questions about soundcard discovery

My father wanted on the internet. His machine was a very old PC with little 
hard disk space and memory. I upgraded what I could, but still was limited 
to installing Tao as a workstation due to storage restrictions.

He's now a little upset with the installation because he can't listen to his 
George Jones CDs and I'm a little confused by what the reason might be for 
this.

The PC orignally had an on-board soundcard, which did not seem to work. I 
disabled that and replaced it with another type of sound card, and it too 
would not work. I can not even listen to the CD directly from the CD drive 
with headphones, but the CD player will read the disc fine, it just won't 
play.

Whenever I change the soundcard, either through removal or the additonal 
card or BIOS enabling of the builtin soundcard, hardware discovery during 
reboot/restart notices the change and I either have to unconfigure or 
reconfigure the soundcard (but never both during the same boot sequence?). 
But "Soundcard Discovery" never finds anything once the system is up and 
running.

Might someone have a clue here? If I can find a larger hard drive, I'll just 
install everything, but I have a feeling something is missing on the install 
for now.
