problem with less when root on a txt console

Hi guys!

Ever since I upgraded my tao-1 box to tao-4, I've had this strange problem
with less.

When logged in as root on a text console (not in a window in X) and I
run a command involving less, it hangs until I do CTRL-C, at which point
less starts workign normally.

Only root. Only on a text console.

I'm stumped. Anyone got a clue on this?
