It's not an academy award.... but....

    Greetings Tao People,

    I'd like to publicly thank David and the other contributors for 
creating Tao Linux.

    I'd also like to thank the gentleman who posted the information for 
migrating RedHat 9 to Tao 1.0 in April.

    I run an insignificant little server farm for my personal use and 
for the use of my clients. Maybe 20 domains total. My servers have been 
actively running and upgraded (both hardware and software) since RedHat 
6. So there's a lot of legacy there... and continuity is is a greatly 
appreciated luxury for me and my clients.

    As many admins have wrestled with the issues surrounding "what to 
do" with the death of the RH9 line, I had been poking around for an 
upgrade path for RH9, and stumbled on Tao Linux.

    Well, I setup a test box with RH7 and a config that roughly matches 
my servers. Then I did the apt-get dance all the way up to RH9. Then 
jumped tracks to Yum and the Tao Repository.

    The upshot of this process was that I was able to cleanly migrate my 
local test box all the way from RH7 to Tao 1.0 with no fatal or hard to 
fix errors. Based on this pretest of this process (which mirrors the 
history of my servers) I was pretty sure I could get my remote machines 
upgraded and functioning under this new distribution.

    I was right. I'm proud to announce that my primary DNS server made 
the upgrade to Tao 1.0 at approximately 4:00am CST- and it's doing just 
fine after a reboot and new kernel.

    Total downtime: 17 minutes.

    Now I talked at length to RedHat and to Suse about a migration from 
RH9 and they both said I had to do a complete server rebuild. I was 
certainly dreading that!

    So thank you. Tao has saved me oodles of time and impending baldness.

    Sunday night I'm scheduled to upgrade my primary mail server, which 
is more complex by an order of magnitude. I will post the results if 
anyone is interested.

    I didn't see anyway to contribute to the costs of maintenance on the 
site. But I'm willing if the facility is available.
