I ran the fuser stuff you suggested, and found some 'c's and one 'm'. I tried
killing the associated processes to no avail. I did confirm, though, that it
took some time to make this happen. If I left the machine on long enough, I
would receive the busy messages on shutdown, but if I shutdown rather quickly
soon after booting, the messages would not appear.

I assume that you re-installed to get rid of /var. After spending some time on
the above fuser attempts, I decided to re-install Update 2 and leave it there. I
had originally installed update 2, installing everything, and then immediately
upgrading all. Since leaving the system at Update 2, I have not seen the
messages. (Could this mean though that the messages are not displaying in Update
2, or that the install fixed something that wasn't installed properly?).

It was your posting that I originally saw on the list, and I was hoping you
could provide a solution.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions and time. I will attempt to upgrade only
the packages as I need them, and will report back as I find that anything changes.
