Remote tar/dump thru RSH does work but remote mt won't.

I have a tape server running RH8 onto which we used to make backups of a Debian machine. We now migrated the Debian machine to Tao, but the mt command no longer works with the notation "mt -f user@tapeserver:/dev/nst0 rewind". The hosts.equiv file is correct, so RSH works from the same machine and same login. Tar too. I'me set the variable MT_RSH to "/usr/bin/rsh" but no go. mt says "user@tapeserver:/dev/nst0: No such file or directory" It's as if Tao's mt hasn't the capacity to work over rsh.
