I have done a couple of the hardware units lately. Cisco 501 pix is about $400 and not to bad to set up. 
501 is 2 zones no DMZ
515 is 3+? zones $2500

www.astaro.com is a software firewall/vpn solution (hardened linux with nice web interface)

poptop - PPTP - Will work with the built in vpn client, its easy to 
setup, but last I look it didn't support compression and was pretty slow.

freeswan (there are a bunch of forks of this) - IPSec - Will work with 
builtin vpn client in windows but is a pain in the ass from what I've 
read, I think they stopped development on this last year also.

openvpn - SSL - I haven't look into this on much, there is a win32 
client, but I think its mostly cli configuaration.

hardware solution - IPSec - like a cisco pix or sonicwall vpn appliance, 
usually easy to setup, but also expensive

Dunno if that helps, the only one I've really used is poptop and its 
pretty slow.
