I don't have any good news on this yet; I had one good person volunteer
to do x86_64, but he's really busy with his new job and not sure when
it'll start.  Certainly I'll have no hard feelings for those who switch
to CentOS, which has (AFAIK) a current x86_64 port.

Also, on a side note, I can't really speak for other arch maintainers. 
We have no plans at AU to start using AMD64, so I have no plans to
maintain that platform myself.  So, I don't really want to make
promises.
