I can tell you that for CentOS, we have recommended that people do not use
yum / up2date to perform an upgrade.  We also recommend the order the Ed
has listed.

1.  Fresh Install.
2.  Upgrade using "linux upgradeany".
3.  yum / up2date / rpm type upgrades (not at all recommended).
