Well, you encouraged me to try my old Colorado trakker and see what 
happens. I hope some of the things I found be useful to you. Note that 
this is the first time I try things with a parallel port unit under 
Linux, and that I have no idea whether it would have worked before 
without these changes. These are my software versions:

Linux kernel 2.4.19
ftape module built from 2002.08.02 snapshot (from ftape-source)
Debian testing as of today.

1) Adding trakker on the ftape-util file to be used as unit 1
    (with an internal unit as unit 0) and trying after
     update-modules:

    # mt -f /dev/nqft1 status
    mt: /dev/nqft1: No such device or address

    Info from the logs:

that is no sucess at all. (Nothing new in /proc/interrupts related to 
parport)

2) Removing modules and adding a line to /etc/modutils/ftape-util (this
    line should really go in a local-changes file in that dir):

    options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7

    update-modules and trying again:

   # mt -f /dev/nqft1 status
   qic-117 drive type = 0x00047, no tape or door open
   drive status = 1
   sense key error = 0
   residue count = 0
   file number = -1
   block number = -1
   gstat = 40000

   Works! I also see interrupt 7 used in /proc/interrupts by parport0.

In both cases 1) and 2) my parallel printer works. I really do not know 
what was changed in woody, but I wold really like to know it.

One more thing, you probably do not need to put any interrupt as an 
option for bkp-fdc, is parport who choses that. For my trakker I needed only

options ftape ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,trakker,none,none

(apart from the change above).
