Ftape problems with parallel port BackPack Model Model 141080

Hello: 

I originally posted this 12/26/02.  I didn't get any feed
back.  It makes me wonder if anyone actually uses ftape
with a Microsolutions Backpack 250 or a Trakker drive connected
to the parallel port? If you are out there I'd love to know how. 

I've spend almost a week fooling with this without success.
I did find an archive:

which had some discussion about this three years ago, 1999 and 2000.
However the more recent months archive directories are empty.
Has this moved? 

I have two different machines, one with a 2.0.36 kernel and
the other with both a 2.2.16 and a 2.4.20 kernel.  I include
the \var\log\messages from the first two of these kernels.
They have the same error although 2.0 has parport compiled into
the kernel and 2.2 uses modules (which it appears I initialize
correctly).  The key line is:

it line 21 for the 2.0 kernel and line 56 for the 2.2 kernel.  Both are
PC clones with io port=0x378 and irq = 7.  Sadly both show the same reply
to the bpck_fdc_query_proto above whether or not the tape drive is connected
to the parallel port!  Note I have the 2.2 configured to try a
trakker and backpack drive, that's why they are both tested. 

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Naturally neither works, a 'ftmt -f /dev/nqft0 status' returns
with 'ftmt: /dev/qft0: Device not configured' 


In the process of testing all this I did download the most recent
ftape-4.04 and ftape-tools-1.09.  It may be of interest that I had
problems building ftape-tools with the 2.0.36 kernel.
Line 46 in libftvt.c includes <iconv.h> which doesn't exist in
this distribution.  I made a dummy file with the required definition.
I also had problems with the definition of HAVE_MINOR in config.h,
but the comments in vtblc.c make it clear it should not be defined for
2.0 kernel so I just edited the config.h. 

Everything built nicely in 2.2.16. 

I could not build ftape under 2.4.20.  The ./configure script hung
after displaying 'checking for own version ... ...'
I tried to build it anyway, but was not successful.  Have not tried
to chase this down.  I was careful about correctly defining my
sym link, usr/src/linux, to point to the correct version and doing
the 'make distclean' and 'make dep'. 

I've done enough damage to my ego this week, I think I will go on
to something else for a while!
