In general you should unset CONFIG_FTAPE, better in the 'make 
menuconfig' or equivalent call (Character Devices section).

If you use Debian (as google dashielljt debian suggests), the only thing 
you cannot do is having ftape compiled internally in the kernel. If it 
is compiled as modules in the kernel and you are using the ftape-source 
Debian package from unstable, the modules package resulting of it will 
divert, on installation, old kernel modules to a name that goes behind 
the new ones in modules.dep, so both can coexist, but only the recent 
one will be used.
