Have you installed the kernel sources and/or kernel-headers RPMs? Check
by running  rpm -qa | grep kernel

I think .config is created the first time you run 'make config' in
/usr/src/linux. This is part of the procedure for building a kernel - I
haven't built ftape without building a kernel firrst, so I'm not sure
just how much of the process you'll have to do.

Building a kernel is not that big a job - IMHO the hardest thing is
answering the questions asked by 'make config'. Instructions are in
/usr/src/linux/README and about a thousand helpful webpages, starting
with the kernel HOWTO:  http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
