I have been unable to get ide-tape to work in 2.4 kernels.  
Using ide-scsi instead, and then using the /dev/st? device
works well, however.  IMHO, since IDE tape drives are actually
SCSI drives with an alternate physical layer, ide-tape should
be dropped altogether, and tapes supported via the SCSI emulation.
