Did you symlink /usr/src/linux to the kernel version of your choice?  Did
you symlink
.config to the appropriate config?

cd /usr/src; ln -s linux-2.4.7-10 linux
cd linux; ln -s configs/kernel-2.4.7-i586.config .config
