I had an old tape drive laying around, along with lots of tapes so I
thought I'd utilize them on my RH 7.3 box. I've been having nothing but
grief trying to make it play correctly on the machine. Basically, most
commands give me an 'Input/output error' , but some do not (such as
rewind). Obviously ftape is finding the drive and talking to it (somewhat).

Anyway, hoping someone can point me in the right direction as I've been
through just about every doc, newsgroup and website I can find on ftape to
no avail.

Here's some system and version info:

[root@rush root]# uname -a
Linux rush 2.4.18-3 #1 Thu Apr 18 07:31:07 EDT 2002 i586 unknown

[root@rush root]# rpm -qa |grep ftape
ftape-4.02-1

[root@rush root]# mt -f /dev/ftape status
qic-117 drive type = 0x00047
File number=0, block number=0.
