HP Colorado 8GB Internal IDE drive

Hi everybody,

I recently got an HP tape drive, and I'm having lots of trouble with it. I'm
using slackware 8.1 with a 2.4.18 vanilla kernel.

I first tried the ide-tape driver, but any access to the tape using mt would
hang (process blocked in kernel state, no response to the KILL signal).

I then tried SCSI emulation, and that works better.

I can read and write data from the tape, rewind and erase it, and skip
 forward (mt fsf).

However, when I try mt eom, mt returns with an input/output error, and the
file number (mt status) is set to -1 (the EOD marker is set though, but I'm
not sure to be at the end of the tape. appending new data sometimes erase the
previous files).

If I try to skip backward (bsf), no error occurs but the block number is set
to -1 and the tape position seems not to have changed.

I'm really lost here, as I'm not able to perform same tape operations. When I
start a new backup I'm not sure if it will be successful and if the previous
data on tape won't be lost.

I'd appreciate any help. I don't have much SCSI background, but I can modify
the driver and perform low level tests if needed.
