fedora: where are the client's logs kept?

How can I find out whats going wrong on the client? Where are the
client's logs kept? Is there a FAQ on debugging the clients?
I'm trying to get some x86_64 clients working.
I've installed a x86_64 chroot and I get as far the LTSP login screen.
When I login as a newly created "test1" user, the authentication is
accepted (according to /var/log/messages on the server)
the screen goes black for a few seconds, then the LTSP login screen
returns. There is no ~test1/.xsession-errors or ~test1/.Xauthority.
My similarly configured i386 clients can successfully open a gnome desktop.
I'm stuck.
