The fix is just adding this line: /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options [shortname=lower,uid=,umask=0077] to our debian-edu-config package installing this file at /usr/share/gconf/defaults. So, in brief, you need to change the default options for vfat and gnome-volume-manager permissions. Hope this helps.
