Hi, I detected and fixed this problem on Debian Edu with Lenny (not using
gvfs, but gnome-vfs, but the problem as fixed in gnome-volume-manager), and
fixed it for Debian Edu.
The fix is just adding this line:
/system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options
[shortname=lower,uid=,umask=0077]
to our debian-edu-config package installing this file at
/usr/share/gconf/defaults.

So, in brief, you need to change the default options for vfat and
gnome-volume-manager permissions.

Hope this helps.

Regards
José L.
