it should be available and executable on the client (it is in the
default xorg install in debian and ubuntu at least) ... as long as both
are the same distro it will work fine, if not you can seed an lts.conf
value and indeed ldminfod is preferred but its not sending that info
yet ... in case it does, it will be only one additional line to the
current code.

i'm not against an *optional* lts.conf value as long as its not
mandatory.

yes, but nobody worked on that, i think the current approach is a good
compromise on the way to a perfect handling.
