i actually plan to work on some arm support in ubuntu in the next
release cycle, but for platforms that a) support PXE booting (TI omap,
TI omap4, Freescale mx5 ...) and b) are powerful enough ... the RPi only
has a 700MHz CPU with just 256M of ram and no dedicated L2 cache for
the CPU, you will not have much fun running a local desktop as a fat
client (if you can make the bootloader netboot, i guess it will serve
fine as a thin client though)

indeed my work in ubuntu wont help you directly (since ubuntu doesnt
support arm arches older than ARMv7 currently) but it should be possible
to adapt my code to it on a debian system.

given the HW constrains the Pi has i would rather recommend something
like the cubox or a pandaboard if you want to try out arm fat clients
though.

ciao
