Configuration infrastructure developed within ALT Linux:
it's three-tier (frontends and backends talk via many-to-many
message passing layer) system with:

- core being written mostly in Scheme
- Qt frontend hooked up via C++ module
  + web frontend is rather a mystery to me by now :)
- backends being written in whatever language your fellow
  sysadmin wishing to fixate his experience might choose,
  but mainly (and those used in installer) it's shell, awk
  and Scheme (there are perl and ruby main loop helpers available
  since backends run like FastCGI processes)

Personally, I think it's in need of calm rewrite, but as it is
it helps a lot: describing user interface in s-expressions with
domain specific language based on Scheme is suddenly quite nice.
(the design and implementation were carried out by inger@ mostly
in crawling deadline mode -- you know it's a miracle if anything
works after, it's a miracle this works either but it does --
including powering installer able to run within 64 megs ;-)

So it's rather distro-specific by this time although not by its
nature; maybe if one day folks who develop configuration systems
in distros (we've studied several, openSUSE of course among them)
would find something interesting for their nex-gen.  That's going
to be at least as much pain as getting distros to notice LTSP5
if not much harder though :-)

Anyways, I've built 4.0rc2 CD in the meantime -- publishing it
so that anyone interested can have a look or just use it where
LTSP4.2 works (sans i486/12M), hope to rsync the image out by
tomorrow.
