You can still serve swap over NBD if you want;
this isn't related to the tftpd issue that you had reported;

anyway, to see if you're using nfs or nbd, on the client, run:
cat /proc/cmdline

and see if it says root=/dev/nbd0 or root=/dev/nfs there.
