Hi there,

I solved the problem and figured I document the solution here, as it might
help other people running into the same problem.

Gnome/Ubuntu did not work, as Xorg used the standard Vesa driver instead of
the Intel driver, which has DRI support needed for modern Gnome/Ubuntu.

Adding XSERVER="intel" to lts.conf solved the problem.

Everything is working fine now, except for weird stripes showing up in
Chrome browser and other little issues with 3D acceleration. My GPU is an
IntelĀ® IrisĀ® Plus Graphics 655, which is rather new. I have installed Xorg
hwe and hwe kernel but It might a few more iterations until everything
works without flaw.

Regards,
Markus
