Looking for help with networking

What do I need to do to enable networking? I found a pretty old message in
the archives (http://not.toms.net/tomsrtbt/199808/msg00017.html) which seems
to fit the description of my computer and NIC. I tried 'insmod 3c509' and it
says it could not locate the module. Could anyone help me? I'm fairly new to
Linux.
