Thank you Tom and Nils for input.
Now it works. I had done as above but I needed to have BIOS setting
'PC Card Controler Mode' set to 'CardBus/16 Bit' and while I thought 
I had tried /every/ combination of this and pcmcia/config - it is
clear now that I hadn't hit upon the correct combination.

Again thank you. Now onto the install.
