Cardmgr crash

I am trying to turn an old laptop into something useful.

On boot it finds the PCMCIA controller OK, identified as Vagem VG-468 ISA to
PCMCIA

When I push in a network card (3c589c) immediately get a message

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 5a5a5a5e

Followed by lots of stack trace stuff.

Ps shows that cardmgr has exited
Lsmod shows

3c589_cs
ds
i882365
pcmcia_core

Any ideas ?
