Trustix Secure Linux Bugfix Advisory #2004-0014
Package name: fcron, crontabs, stunnel, kernel, ntp
Summary: Bugfixes in multiple packages
Date: 2004-03-30
Affected versions: Trustix Secure Linux 2.1
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Package description:
crontabs:
The crontabs package contains root crontab files. Crontab is the
program used to install, uninstall or list the tables used to drive the
cron daemon. The cron daemon checks the crontab files to see when
particular commands are scheduled to be executed. If commands are
scheduled, it executes them.
fcron:
Fcron is a scheduler. It aims at replacing Vixie Cron, so it implements most
of its functionalities.
kernel:
The kernel package contains the Linux kernel (vmlinuz), the core of your
Trustix Secure Linux operating system. The kernel handles the basic functions
of the operating system: memory allocation, process allocation, device
input and output, etc.
ntp:
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize a computer's
time with another reference time source. The ntp package contains
utilities and daemons that will synchronize your computer's time to
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) via the NTP protocol and NTP servers.
The ntp package includes ntpdate (a program for retrieving the date
and time from remote machines via a network) and ntpd (a daemon which
continuously adjusts system time).
stunnel:
stunnel is a socket wrapper which can be used to give ordinary
applications SSL (secure sockets layer) support. For example, it
can be used in conjunction with a imapd to create a SSL secure IMAP
server.
Problem description:
crontabs:
The /etc/fcrontab was a duplicate interface to roots crontab and could
mislead people into thinking they were editing a system crontab as opposed
to the one belonging to the root user.
fcron:
This is related to the crontabs bugfix and is just a rearrangement of how
it was added.
kernel:
Added the hpt366 and hpt34x modules to the BOOT kernel. This will
allow people to install on such controllers directly.
ntp:
Due to an error in the startup script, ntp would not syncronize initially
against the time servers.
stunnel:
There was an error in the startup script that would exit with the wrong
message if it could not find the binary.
Action:
We recommend that all systems with this package installed be upgraded.
Please note that if you do not need the functionality provided by this
package, you may want to remove it from your system.
