You are so asking for pain and trouble. :-)
If you really need a cheap solution which might work or might not work, 
then go ahead.
i would go and get 2 12port controllers, and setup a raid5 on both of 
them. You dont need the space in one big block, do you?

Another idea would be to use the sata2scsi systems from eonstor or 
infortrend, which are atm the best solution for fast and reliable (and 
rather cheap) sata storage...
