Two 3ware 12 port controllers will cost about EUR 1800,- here, I find  
it quite expensive..

One big advantage of using linux md always was easy monitoring (just  
check changes on /proc/mdstat and send email alert), and the ease of  
remote management. Don't know how to do this with hw raid cards.

When I have a throughput of say 20Mb/s total on my raid set, that  
would be fast enough for this system, as it is used by only one  
client. I think that should not be a problem with cheap sata ports  
combined with linux md.
