I did it once, but cannot remember for sure how I did it. Presumably, you can 
get along with mdadm in assemble-mode, hence something like

mdadm -A -s /dev/mdXXX

or

mdadm -A /dev/mdXXX /dev/sdXXX /dev/sdXXX ...
