I tried a small setup and adding a new disk to the raid5 set. When  
expanding it with the mdadm grow option it say's:

mdadm: Need to backup 384K of critical section..
mdadm: /dev/md0: Cannot get array details from sysfs

Searched and it looks like kernel 2.4 can't do this.
