newbie 2nd NIC config help request

To enable playing with this modem I installed a 2nd NIC into my Linux box.

eth0 is static connected to my 4-port DSL router. (192.168.2.17)
eth1 is dhcp connected to Actiontec modem.       (192.168.0.4)

Got the 2nd NIC up and working, telnet to the modem ok (192.168.0.1), but 
then DNS for the web quits working and I can no longer surf from the Linux 
machine via eth0.

if I do:  ifconfig eth1 down

and wait for a while, then surfing works fine.

if I do: ifconfig eth1 up

I can no longer surf, however I can still ping web machines by manually 
specifying x.x.x.x addresses.

ie.

ping mit.edu               blah blah - unknown host - blah blah
ping 18.7.21.70          works fine

BTW, I did a route -n and see the default route is still on the 192.168.2.x 
rail, which is how it should be.

This DNS thing is probably a very classic 2 NIC problem, and I appologize 
for asking this group, but my searching HOWTO's for this solution has been a 
little frustrating so far.

I thought perhaps some of you have your Linux box set up similar to this and 
have gotten past this issue already?

BTW, not sure this matters but the 2nd NIC I installed is an old ISA Linksys 
Ether16CT that was gathering dust in a junk drawer.

modprobe ne  io=0x300 irq=5

Seems to work fine other than messing up my DNS.  (I assume that DHCP from 
the modem is hijacking it)
