Hey Andi. I take my hat off and put a feather in yours. 

The project I am working on (https://www.avaneya.com) is heavily
dependent on Umbrello and I spend long hours staring at it. The size of
my drawings alone is 2 MB. I wonder if Umbrello is just saving some
redundant data though in there.

In any case, thanks a lot. I applied your patch cleanly to svn head,
built, installed, and ran it successfully. Hopefully someone will weasel
it into mainline.
