Application? You mean control point? For a handheld I would have assumed
you would have meant device, but that is really tangent to your
question.

The UPnP SDK for Linux is the only open source UPnP SDK for Linux that
I'm aware of. I seem to recall some proprietary vendors of SDK's but I
can't comment on their Linux support.

I cannot comment specifically with respect to embedded Linux. The last
time I worked with embedded Linux (4-5 years ago) one had to pick what
features were enabled to try and get it to fit in the memory footprint.
Whether the SDK runs in this constrained environment would be a function
of the base features in the embedded OS. Parts of the SDK make heavy of
of threads which may be an issue (I'm not sure though).

In general the SDK does appear to have been written for "compact
deployment". It's mostly self contained with few references to external
libraries.
