An excellent method is to set up an IMAP server. Be careful if leaving
it open to access from the Internet. As a general rule firewalling this
kind of thing off, or even using hosts.allow, is best for peace of mind.

Clients such as PINE, Mutt, Mozilla, KMail, Open Web Mail can all use
IMAP. Whats more don't try to move your inbox into their own storage.

If you have a Windows box on your network, you can even reach your IMAP
server from Outlook Express, though in that case I'd really reccomend
some kind of incoming mail virus scanner. I had 14 more copies of the
latest arrive over night and will get round to configuring procmail to
dump anything matching "<iframe src="cid:.*" height=0 width=0>"
