RE: IE-only sites

Hi Ian,

Please read my response to Bill. To give you an example, I called my bank
(two internet-only banks in Spain, none of them will work without IE, I work
with both and I wouldn't change that because it's soooo much cheaper than
regular banks here). They said their site should work with Netscape (they
have no idea of what Mozilla is...). I told them it didn't. They said it
does. End of the discussion. :-(

Even the government in Spain is having websites that can't be accessed
without IE (you can pay your taxes online and many other usual
administrative tasks; nice and modern, bla, bla, bla... but only for IE
users). However, there's an ongoing pressure by a small Linux lobby around
here and maybe they get somewhere. No success so far... :-(

Now let's suppose for a minute that these problems only happen really in
Spain and there's no other way but creating a browser that will comply with
every little thing IE does. Is that even possible? I'm a graphics programmer
and -although it's not my specialty- I would happily dive into the thing if
there was any chance.

PS: www.dpwsreview.com, probably the best site to be informed about digital
cameras, only works partially with FB. On the left hand side of the page
there's a menu. With IE, if you hover over the items you get submenus. On FB
you get nothing... My position is: Sure I can start complaining to every
site that uses IE-only procedures, but this might be an eternal task. The
other big problem with that is you don't always get the feedback about
something going wrong. Sometimes you simply don't know it's FB or it's
something wrong with the site, even if there's something wrong at all (most
people not using IE will NEVER know you can access some places at
dpreview.com only through the submenus I mentioned...). Too tiring, really.
