For the ps command:
- options consisting of a single letter are BSD style options
- options consisting of a single letter preceeded by a hyphen or minus sign 
  are System V style options
- options consisting of a longer name preceeded by a double hypen (minus sign)
  are GNU style options

Of course, the situation differs per program / command. Too bad, occasionally
you have two versions of Linux which support options with the same syntax
but different meanings. This is the result of over thirty years of Unix his-
tory with many not quite compatible versions.
