have you tried screen?? screen allows you to have multiple virtual
terminals in a single xterm or aterm or any other terminal. it works
with the console as well and has very very nice and useful features.
you can copy and paste between applications plus a lot lot more.

having a screenrc file would help a lot as well and you can download
one from Sven's page like i did, or i can mail you mine as well.
