copy paste works for me when i use phoenix and gvim in the
conventional sense, i.e. use the menus -> edit -> copy and then 
menu -> edit -> paste. i use RedHat 7.1 on my intel box. kde is
version 2.2.1 i can copy text from phoenix and paste in kedit as well.
perhaps it is because i use enlightenment as my window manager.

pressing the middle mouse button works as well in vim which is what i
primarily use for most of my work.

amen to that. and the change is almost always for the better :)
