I agree. To add to this, if I want to check the version of the program to see if it is behind on patches, RPM and Apt-get are very helpful, compiled source executables are a lot more work. As an example, Sendmail does not always increment it's version number when a patch is applied. So 6 months later how do I know if this patch was applied ? I would have to keep file data such as date/time/File hash to keep track of it. Hence more info to looks at just to be sure if I got the patch applied. RPM --query sendmail ----------> sendmail <version number>-<patch number> I am not not a fan of how RPMs install, but when tracking version to see if I am up to date on patches, it works out well. Most packaging software accepts the "install" option to install software. For example building from source with a Makefile you do: make install With rpm, you do rpm --install But if you want to remove software it becomes a pain. Not all Makefiles have an option for removing software. If they do you have to guess at what its called. Is it uninstall, deinstall, remove, delete, erase? rpm drives me nuts (well everything about rpm really) but to me --erase is non-obvious. If you install and want to do the opposite would not the opposite of install be uninstall?
