Alternatively, download up2date and up2date-gnome for the version of RH
you're running (e.g.
<ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/9/en/os/i386/up2date-3.1.23.2-1.i386.rpm>
and
<ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/9/en/os/i386/up2date-gnome-3.1.23.2-1.i386.rpm>
for RH9) then, as root
rpm -Fvh up2date*
in the directory you downloaded them to.

I've not used RH's paid-for up2date service and your comments are somewhat
alarming. Personally, I just grab and install the updates manually from
ftp.redhat.com or a mirror. If was running an enterprise network, I'd deploy
a current <http://current.tigris.org> server and upload packages to that
(after I'd tested them locally) for distribution to all the other hosts I
managed.
