Apparently you have lived a charmed life if you have a windows
machine exposed directly to the net and NOT had worms, viruses,
rpc breakins, etc.  Either that, or windows just didn't know
it was hacked and never bothered to tell you.

Don't mistake the supposed functionality of a software firewall
such as Mcaffe or Zone alarm for any real protection.
These are easily circumvented. 
I suggest you google "zone alarm" vulnerability  
and see how many hits you get.
