For lazy users Debian Linux has a very nice package management scheme.
You just type 'apt-get install favourite-app' and it proceeds to  
download and configure your stuff, together with with the libraries
it needs. No need to stress you grey cells or abuse small rodents.

Of course, when their offering does not suit your needs, you end
up compiling the latest version and installing it alongside the
version that your distro provides.
