Annoyance : unable to shut the comptuer down with linux

Hi;

Linux is, as of yet unable to shut off your computer if you computer has 
newer hardware.

Some uber geeks can do this by recompiling their kernel with the power 
management module

If you can make this a step by step clear process for mere mortals I 
will buy your book :)
