This has worked fine for me on every machine I've
tried it with that was physically capable (e.g. atx power
supply as a minimum requirement).

I use SuSE, perhaps your Distro needs special kernal compiles
but thats not my expierence.  One exception is my dual processor
machine.  It just halts, because each processor can not be
sure the other processor is done.
