Eric,

If gentoo really is faster, it might be worth the hassle of compiling.  But, 
before I go that far, can you expound a little bit on where you noticed the 
increased speed (compared to some non-compiled (i.e., binary) distribution)?

Was your experience on the same machine and with the same applications and 
versions?

How long ago?
