As of Red Hat 8, you just have to create a ~/.ttf directory, copy the fonts in and restart X windows. KDE (my window manager of choice) will see the fonts and make them available to all KDE apps and Mozilla. You may have to tweak them in some applications like Open Office (but it includes a tool to do so) and any GTK apps may have to have this fixed by doing the above as well (or creating a symbolic link between the two directories.
