These ancient devices, (yes, even AC97) generally don't allow more than one sound source at a time. That's why there is such a thing as artsd, which multi-plexes the sound card allowing you to listen to two things at once... It blends the sound sources (music and incomming mail notifications for instance) and feed one sound stream to the card.
