Dear Colleagues,

This is a follow-up to the message "Some flickerings of good news" that
I sent out last Friday(Halloween).  I have replied to Mr Alperson that
our local group is preparing a draft letter for him, and we will have
a package of supporting materials also.  I am now writing to ask you
all for suggestions about supporting materials.  I think, just as
examples, of the Mitre report and the Quaterman et al report on cyber 
security; I actually have quite a bit of stuff, but haven't reviewed it.

It is not too late to write to Congressman Van Hollen( % Phil Alperson,
as suggested in Friday's message) if by any chance you perhaps haven't
yet done so<g>.  It would be nice if you would let us all know what
you've written, so that we all can be aware that there is energy behind
this initiative.   And of course many of you have Congresspeople you
might wish to be in touch with.  I apologize for sounding like a
broken record<g>.

We are swamped this week.  The letter hasn't gone out yet.  Hasn't even been

	I think that if this is carried through well we will not need to

A couple of announcements:  I plan to inform the Linux community in this
area of Mr Van Hollen's plan, and urge them to write him to congratulate
him and thank him.

I also plan to write to a couple of newspaper contacts, one on the WaPo
the other on the NYTimes, as they may be interested in this.  Please
remember that Mr Van Hollen can stand firmly and forthrightly on the
ground that this has the possibility of saving the Legislative branch money,
and making individual offices more efficient and secure.

I think that it is now time for me to go after Sarbanes and Mikulski.<g>
